Getting Beat Up by Your Surfboard

Number one rule when learning how to surf: don’t get beat up by your own surfboard! You may have felt like trying surfing one day and borrowed your buddy’s surfboard to try it out, only to find that you were having a battle with the waves and your board, and your board won. It’s not fun to get beat up by a hard shortboard, which will happen to anyone if they don’t have the skill level to handle it. While your buddy may be a good surfer, he had to practice to get to that point, and his surfboard may not the best kind for a beginner to learn how to surf with.

If you don’t want to clunked on the head by thick fiberglass or resin, or get scraped up by sharp fins on the end of the board, get the right surfboard for beginners: a softboard. Softboards, also called foam boards, are designed to not only be soft and have rubber fins, they are usually also longer and have a greater width than a shortboard. A foam surfboard is the perfect board to learn on, because they are much easier to balance on and learn the surfing basics, as well as the fact that they are softer and won’t beat you up out there on the waves.

It’s no fun to try a new sport and come home with scrapes and bruises. You can save yourself a lot of pain by getting the surfboard that is made for beginners, so that you can get the basics down and learn how to control your board. The long softboard provides the stability you need to get your balance and learn how to catch those waves. And once you learn how to surf, you will also learn a lot about controlling your board, so that when you do advance to the shortboard, you won’t ever be beat up by your own board again!
