It’s getting close to that time of the year again: Fun in the sun time! What better way to spend your summer at the beach, or at least taking a vacation so that you can be near the beach? Of course, you will want to stay cool and in the water on those warm days, and kids always have a lot of energy to run around when you’re outside. What better way to channel that energy into getting them started on a new hobby, and they can learn a new sport? Surfing is a classic beach pastime, and if you’re worried that your kids could get hurt, then maybe you don’t know that there are soft surfboards made just for kids and beginners.
Soft surfboards are constructed differently than many wooden, epoxy, or fiberglass surfboards. They are made of foam, which is much kinder to you if you wipe out on your surfboard, which you will inevitably do when you are learning. Soft surfboards, or “foamies” are a great way for kids to get out there and try surfing so that they don’t get hurt. They also come equipped with rubber fins, also called skegs, because traditional resin or fiberglass fins can cut skin. Soft surfboards are the really the way to go for kids and all beginning surfers, so that they can get the basics down with the least chance of injury.
Foamies are also longer than shortboards, and have great flotation for the new surfer. A soft surfboard will provide maximum stability so grommets (kid surfers) can balance on their board much more easily and catch waves faster. It’s frustrating to fight with your balance the entire time, so your kids will have a much more rewarding experience with soft surfboards than with traditional surfboards that aren’t made just for beginners and kids.
So go ahead and feel good about letting your kids try out surfing this summer when you go to the beach. If you ask the instructors to use soft surfboards or foamies for your little grommets, they will surely have them on hand. Soft surfboards are the safe way for new surfers to get their balance and coordination with the least amount of injury, and the length and buoyancy make it a rewarding new sport to try.
