Surfing 101 for Beginners

Maybe you’ve been thinking about trying the sport of surfing for awhile now, and you’ve decided that it’s time to pursue it. But you don’t want to spend a fortune on a surfboard and all the accessories if you try it and find that it’s not really for you. So what is the best way to try surfing without spending a small fortune on surfing gear?

First, either enroll yourself in a surfing school or find a surfing teacher to get out there with you and show you the basics. There is nothing more frustrating than trying a new sport and failing miserably because you have no idea what you’re doing and no one to teach you the correct techniques. And, nothing can dampen your enthusiasm for a new sport more quickly than feeling you can’t do it. Anyone can learn how to surf with the right teacher, so don’t be afraid to sign up for a class or ask a good friend to teach you the basics.

Second, find yourself some second-hand or inexpensive gear. You can look at our cheap surfboards section, because you can find a new but inexpensive surfboard. There are plenty of inexpensive surfboards out there to choose from, and a long board is going to the best bet for beginners. Look for a long board made of foam with a fiberglass or vinyl finish. These boards offer excellent stability and buoyancy, and make it easier for new surfers to find their balance on the water.

The best resource for finding out what you’ll need is other surfers. Talk to the board shop employees or your surfing friends. You’ll need to buy some surfboard wax for your new board, so you don’t do the slip and slide out on the water. Almost every inexpensive surfboard is going to need wax, and wax is what will give the standing surface a grip for your feet. You probably also want to purchase a surfboard leash, so that you spend less time chasing after your board and more time catching the waves. Depending on how cold the water is where you will be learning how to surf, you may or may not need to purchase a wetsuit or at least a rashguard to protect your skin. Since wetsuits can be expensive, you may want to make sure you like surfing before investing in one.
